Dear Non-Celebrity Person Dx w/T1D…….YOU. ARE. STILL. A. HERO.

Dear Moms and Dads of a child with T1D,

I, like you, have a child who has been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. In fact, 2 of our 3 children have T1D, 1 diagnosed at age 2 and another at age 13.

No other words for it……it sucks.
One thing I have noticed is, when a celebrity, or the child of a celebrity, is diagnosed with diabetes the world comes to them offering condolences, love, advice, prayers and good wishes. Books can be filled with all the posts in the world of social media. What wonders their children are. How brave they are. What wonderful love to share with the world regarding their child’s newly diagnosed disease. The child is declared a hero. And most of the written word surrounding them states the same thing.

There’s nothing wrong with this, but I want to be clear. The child diagnosed in the poorest section of town, in a hospital where bills are paid by the government because the family has zero means to pay any of the bills, and they face the same fears and the same pains. Few people know their mom or dad. That child is no less a hero than the first child we mentioned.

How many people have asked, “What can I do to help in the huge world of diabetes?” “How can I possibly make a difference; I’m only one person?”
Well today’s your lucky day. Here’s how.

Visit your local hospital or pediatric endocrinology office and say to the person at the front desk at doc’s office or the pediatric ward, when they hear of a newly diagnosed child or a newly diagnosed child comes in, they are to call or text you. Just a quick text, Suzy came in today and was diagnosed. You will come by and drop off a stuffed animal for Suzy and a note for the parents: I was so sorry to hear of Suzy’s diabetes diagnosis. The stuffed bear is for Suzy. The box of tissues is for you. I know, we’ve been there. 🙂 Know this and believe this; it gets better. Feel free to call if you want to talk Sincerely, Joyce @ (333)333-3333.
Trust me, you will change their world.
