Hey AI—Why Not Teach Yourself to Help Mankind?

I guess the cautionary tale, these days, in the world of social media and online communications is artificial intelligence; beware. So many seemed to be obsessed with the idea that machine will mimic us in an uncontrollable way. A way that will almost begin thinking for itself and go in directions unwanted or unplanned. Think “HAL” in 2001:A Space Odyssey. The futuristic film, created in 1968, is now 56 years old and archaic by any means you want to measure. But the premise remains begging the question, will machines (computers) become so smart that disabling them will become the only way us mere mortals can survive?

Further detailed in the 2013 film Her, the complete opposite approach was entertained opening up the possibility of one falling in love with a machine. I guess if all machines sounded like Scarlett Johansson, that just might become a possibility. No matter the reason, the premise of machines taking over is an idea that has played on the minds of many for years.

Recently, I found fascinating reading in Time Magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential People in AI. Like it or not, AI is here to stay……and more so if liked even less, has only started to grow. As I read Time’s magazine, what struck me was how little the AI space is being populated for the betterment of science and research. Clearly the bulk of thought is how to make money on recreation creations trying to make the public believe that these recreations are slated to be better than the original creation. Did you get that?

Here is my suggestion. In many parts of the country, when a developer wants to submit plans for a building/construction project, a certain percentage MUST be dedicated to something that will better the community; nature; arts; recreation—-something to help. I think any and all AI projects should dedicate a certain percentage of income to help mankind. Scientific research, better air quality, greener world, something that will not merely line people’s pockets. This way, a benefit will come with advancement. Doesn’t take a machine to teach us that…….does it?
