….and the answer is, people with diabetes.
I hope you have enjoyed this month-long highlighting of just a handful of people active in the diabetes community. There are certainly many more and my goal was just to span the field and show you just a few who are at this diabetes battle to benefit all of us.
To close out the month I have chosen those who have diabetes. Whether you have it or you children have it; it is for them that this month was created. To take 30 days and shine a light on what this ‘thing’ called diabetes is all about. To try to alert the world that attention must be paid to diabetes and the number of people living with it grows every day.
To those who do anything in this battle and do not have diabetes, we work diligently to find and create better treatments and to one day cure this disease and yet truth is; we really do not understand what it is like to have something 24/7/365 with no break, as you do. We only know what you tell us, as parents we only know what we observe. Still, it is you that ultimately must deal with this disease, live with this disease with no break, and we completely respect and love you for everything you go through
.
As a parent may I say only this; although we do not have diabetes and do not fully understand ALL THAT YOU go through; we hurt that we cannot take it away from you and we will continue the fight, the battle, the tears, the sleepless night, the patrol of the diabetes police, the fund-raising, the fighting with insurance companies, the doing all we can to make your life better…..we will pledge this battle because we love you. When you get a break, we’ll get a break……not one second before.
For Diabetes Awareness Month:
This month, I will be highlighting someone in the diabetes community. They may be people you know, or might not know, but they give of themselves to make this world, our world, with diabetes a special place. I will not get to everyone this month, but it is my hope that perhaps you can be introduced to some of those you may not know.
I’m certainly not the definitive on who should be included….you are. If you think I should include someone, shoot me an email at tkarlya@drif.org and I will do what I can to include that person as well. Welcome to diabetes awareness month.
